A Way Back, 2022
Category: Belle Jacque
Belle Jacque is a self-taught surrealist working primarily with paint, tattooing, installation, and digital art. Having grown up very introverted with selective mutism, she draws from a cardinal connection to the inner world and subconscious wandering, recording both dreams and semi-conscious experiences for material. She continues to attempt communicating nonverbally by molding qualia into surreal forms, deliberately giving a tangible shape to ineffable sensations. Jacque often experiments with translating these images into other disciplines through collaboration: most recently through neuro adaptive augmented reality; music production; fashion photography, and street art.
In her tattooing work and AR ventures with neuroscientists, Jacque focused on ritual practices and belief, experimenting with interactive perceptual illusions to create heightened states of attention as a mode of art therapy. She has been hosting public and private sessions incorporating this method in various ways, documenting them since early 2022.
Currently her visual art practice explores decay, ranging from organic decomposition to the loss of memory. This collection includes paintings, digital artworks, and forays into sculptural taxidermy and articulation.
Belle Jacque’s work has been showcased at Open House Hackney, Two More Years, Imperial Lates, The Old Baths, Preto, The Pimlico Project, and The Yard Theatre, and can currently be seen at Oslo White Walls, Unit 58, and various street sides.
