Workshop: mapping identities, memories, and food cultures through clay with Yasmin Falahat
How do objects and foods pass down memories? How do they inform who we are and the construction of our identities? These are the questions that root Yasmin Falahat’s hand-building workshop as we share, mould, and pay homage to the stories and archival powers that objects hold.
It’s often said that the kitchen table is the heart of a home – it’s the space where we convene, gather, and feed ourselves and one another. The stories that get shared in this communal space as well as the memories that food and objects hold play a crucial role in helping us contextualise our place in the world and shape our sense of self and identity.
Taking this as our starting point, Yasmin invites you to reflect on a specific food or object that holds a memory or personal story that is important to you and your sense of identity. In the workshop, we will share our selected objects and the stories they hold before hand-building and moulding them in clay form, resulting in own collection of personal treasures and shared memories on our communal ‘kitchen table’.
After the workshop, Yasmin will fire and plain glaze your creations, so they are ready for you to collect from the Nunnery Gallery after the workshop.
All materials provided – no experience with clay required.
This workshop will take place either in our outdoor courtyard (if the weather is on our side!) or in our indoor courtyard room at our main site at Bow Arts Trust, E3 2SJ.
